Towards a World Social Forum of Transformative Economies. The other world that already exists.
Barcelona, Spring 2019 – Spring 2020
As announced in the last World Social Forum in Salvador de Bahia, Brasil, RIPESS Intercontinental, RIPESS Europe and the XES proposed to start a process of convergence, both locally and internationally, among all those initiatives, organisations and movements, within and beyond the social solidarity economy, who are building a real alternative to the mainstream financial and economic system. This process would lead to a thematic Social Forum of transformative economies.
The main goal of this process is to bring together social movements and practice-based initiatives with a strong commitment to change the economy of extraction, growth, competitiveness and market into resilient, collaborative and solidarity societies, building and strengthening alliances and strategic actions by working together.
We want to involve and engage in a dialogue with public institutions (especially municipalities and other local and regional authorities), with the perspective of co-building constructing public policies that allow the above-mentioned actors to improve and promote their work.
The World Social Forum of Transformative Economies is aimed at giving public visibility and recognition to transformative economy projects, promoting an alternative narrative to counter the mainstream discourse.
In many cases, this convergence is already taking place: we want to accelerate and strengthen it in order to set a new world agenda from both networked local nodes and international alliances.
In order to be able to start with a solid basis, a first call was made in Barcelona – where the events will take place – involving 5 main areas:
- The EcoFeminist Economies (and in general the Gender perspective) - The Agroecological and the Food Sovereignty Movements -The (Natural, Urban and Digital) Commons -The Social Solidarity Economy (including Fair Trade and Cooperativism) -The Ethical and Solidarity Finances
Once the process is being launched on the local level, the call for involvement will be extended at a continental and international level, with a progressive buildup that will take into account solutions offered by transformative economies around the world to tackle the major challenges we are facing.
Following the spirit of the World Social Forums, we want to go beyond grass-roots movements and integrate in the debate the need for rethinking public policies through municipalities as well as the work done with Universities and youth/student groups, artistic and cultural actors, independent media collectives and progressive philanthropic foundations.
We don't want a show-room event that bring experts from all over the world, without continuity or and impact; we've had enough of discussing and dreaming about “the other world that is possible”. This “other world” already exists with thousands of successful initiatives in all domains: we need to find common strategies to multiply them, making them more visible and accessible in the mainstream and contribute to major transformations. We have committed ourselves to turning the process of convergence into the goal itself: this will be (and need to be) a two year path that will cross through events all around the world and includes two meetings in Barcelona: a world capital of the transformative economies.
1. Spring 2019: First convergence meeting
We will meet for 3 days with representatives of the main networks and social movements of the four above mentioned different thematic areas, as well as academic research groups and members of municipalities. It will be a work meeting to set up dynamics that can develop new processes of convergence at a local and international level. This meeting will be a warm up for the World Social Forum and will allow fixing objectives to prepare the terrain ground internationally, and to ensure assure that the big event of 2020 reaches its goals and has a continuity. We count with on a the participation of about 500 people from the 5 continents for this strategy building work meeting.
2. Spring 2020: World Social Forum of the Transformative Economies
Going beyond the limits of the Thematic Social Forums, we want this event to be a useful meeting that sets a world agenda, with collective compromises commitments and concrete agreements, assuring ensuring a continuity of the movement through the work done after a convergence process of two years. A whole week of talks, meetings and general assemblies inter-connecting the four different thematic axes, but also with a rich cultural programme and involvement of the local population and transformative initiatives of Barcelona and Catalonia. We expect more than 10.000 participants for this historical event.
